Words For A Friend

There were words I should have said

Before you went there

Words that could have helped you, my friend

But now you are not here

I could hear the sound of your voice

But I couldn’t make out the words

The words I should have said

Were indifferent for even my ears to be heard

I cannot get past this

I wish I would have known

How far you went there

How far you sunk low

I was there too

All covered in ashes and murk

Until Jesus came to save my life

I guess I left you to hurt

But now these words 

I am saying to you

Will free you from the bondage
There is healing, there is truth

With words I am speaking now

Words I should have said

These sad old words

Are straight from my own regret
