A Promise to Hold Onto

The last few weeks, I have been thinking about the promsies of God. Those that have been accomplished (eg: Jesus and his death and resurrection) and those yet fulfilled. I posted a song the other day that made me think of a few people in my life, that I myself have played through my mind over and over again because of the meaning and Bible verses behind it. Today, here's another that has got me thinking about the promises of God. Go to 1:12 if you want to just listen to the song. The artists talk a little bit of story and verses behind the song.

"Kingdom of Heaven" by Jenny and Tyler from their new album "Open Your Doors"

Colossians 3:1-2 says, to "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not things on earth." Why should we do this, you and I may wonder. God has been showing me one thing. That is, hope is found in our depressing lives when we hold onto the promise of the Kingdom of Heaven that is to come. Or to put it in a more simple way, a better home. Check out John 14:1-4:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

As a believer in Christ, that gives me joy and hope of what is to come. I've said it before, but remember that gleeful feeling you got as a child before Christmas that no matter what happened, you were going to be alright? You had gifts to open in a few days! I know there have been times I look to God in a difficult time in my life and he reminds me of the promises he has made. He never said life wasn't going to be hard, but he does tell me what my future is going to be like. Short summary: Unimaginably great!

Today, hold onto the hope of God's promises, one which is heaven to come. I know this has pushed me through some difficulties in life when I am unsure of a few things. No matter what, I have a guranteed gorgeous future ahead of me. I hope this does help someone. Maybe even look up a few promises God has fulfilled already, such as the one with Abraham.

"Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.' Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification." ~ Roman 4:18-25

You see, God has promises in our lives to fulfill too, just like Abraham. We just have to seek him and see what he wants to do with us. If I believe God is calling me to go into ministry, I better believe he is going to get me into ministry. Even consider the prophecies of the Messiah fulfilled by Jesus, like Isaiah 53. Each promise and detail fulfilled. Today, look to Him and let him give you the glee of the great future that is to come for you and me as believers in Christ. There are gaps left unspoken of what will happen to each one of us in our lives, whether our life will be a trip to the zoo or a trip to the doctors, God ultimately has his plans set in the time of humanity's existence.

Homework: Read through Psalm 82-84. Psalm 84 is such a beautiful chapter, but really consider the transition from the laments of Psalms 82 and 83 to the joy and hope found in Psalm 84, where the ultimate destination of every believer will be. That is life. This world is mundane compared to the one to come. Think about it!
